Because they (British/Aussies) actually go to school and tailor the craft of acting.

Not like American actors who either blow someone in the industry or get "discovered" working at Starbucks.

you see, I don't buy that (at least in the case of australia)

there's a bigger theatre culture in new york alone than the whole of australia

There are acting schools all over LA and NYC. There's probably more people in those schools right now that there are British and Australian actors in the USA.

I remember reading an article about HBO's insistence on casting britsh actors and it basically came down to cost. Sure, we can pluck thousands of young actors from LA for cheap but if you start wanting established, names with a track record already then the British will be cheaper than an American with the same record and quality.

My guesses are, financial reasons, Actors Guild laws, filming rights, movie regulations, and labor union laws. Mostly it has something to do with monetary compensation with indirect to the consequence of globalism.

Because they will work for cheaper.
This sentence pretty much sums up the OP's question and this thread right here.
