Not too sure if they thought it was going to make 250 million domestically but the trailers were bad and it took word of mouth to market this flick.

I'm not a big fan of this film and think it's actually overrated by the stans it accumulated.

They should have kept the OG title.

The timing of this thread is funny because Cruise was just talking about making a sequel a couple days ago. He loved the movie. The director Christopher McQuarrie is interested, so is Emily Blunt but she can't do it any time soon due to scheduling.

On a side note there's going to be a sequel to the novel "All You Need Is Kill", unrelated to the second movie.

Well, for one it had a bad opening which usually means flop. But the word of mouth was incredible and it had crazy legs so it ended up doing okay.

However, a 178 million budget and a 369 million return is not great.

They say the rule of thumb is a film has to make 2-3 times its budget to become profitable.

#1 that budget doesnt include marketing. Sometimes marketing can cost as much or more than the budget.

#2 domestic theatres take about 50% of the money.

Worldwide it fluctuates by market but it can be from anywhere to theatres taking 60-80% of the money.

So all in all it probably ended up breaking even, possibly making a small profit on blu ray/dvd etc

But it wasnt successful.

On top of that you dont know what the studios goals were. I mean disney outchea considering age of ultron to be a failure and it made 1.4 bill

The average person doesn't know this though, and I think they like it that way so when a movie "makes money", studios can lie to themselves, each other, and the public about how well they're doing.

They put "marketing" in another line on the spreadsheet so they can feel better about themselves when they should just be honest and lump that shyt together and swallow the pill.

It's like winning a million on scratch tickets but forgetting to mention you spent 750,000 on losing tickets before you won.

Not sure what people are talking about. The marketing for this movie was awesome and heavy. Tons of TV and trailer spots, and the trailer was great.

This rests solely at the feet of bad timing and the mess that was 'Oblivion', which was Cruise's last movie before this came out. They both looked way too similar, and after 'Oblivion' bombed, people didn't want to take another chance with 'Edge of Tomorrow'. I'm glad I did though, it was such a nice surprise.

I didnt even think Oblivion was that bad....6-7/10 flick for me. Its been said 100 times already but the marketing for this flick was terrible. The trailers did a terrible job showing what the movie was actually about. I think the "villains" couldve been done better too. All they showed was Tom Cruise running around in a suit couldnt event tell what the hell he was fighting against from the trailers :russ:

I'm glad it made a little bank. Movie was dope, I regret not seeing it in theaters though.

:usure: the blu came out a year ago

I also think this movie mainly suffered because Oblivion came right before it. And it looked really similar. I only peeped it cuz it was a free screening and i was glad i went. Copped the blu day one

I adore this flick
