why do we always say that we were slaves for 400 years?

All depends on how you define slavery.

If you view capitalism as an institution that produces conditions of de facto slavery, then it's quite reasonable to hypothesize that slavery has been around for centuries. You would at least have to go back to the birth of capitalism. So that means 500+ years.

We arrived on slave ships in chains at the turn of the 16th century. And a disproportionate amount of us are in prisons today--still in chains.

We were working for free then. And we work for free or minimal wages today.

We were getting whipped, beat, and brutalized by plantation overseers then. And we are getting shot, beat, and brutalized by police today.

It's all a matter of perspective.

The more pressing question is what makes you think you are free?

For the purpose of this thread the OP is referring to European Colonial Plantation Slavery in the New World/Western Hemisphere, specifically......now no doubt, folks form all corners of the world have endured bondage/slavery throughout human history..

Perspective of whether or not we are currently free can be seen in this thread right here... http://www.the-coli.com/higher-learning/22151-us-becoming-police-state.html

So we're not on plantations now. This is true. How much have our living conditions really changed/improved, though? The projects and poor inner city hoods still look and seem pretty fukked up, in my opinion.

And I was referring to the elite white Europeans who stole the land of America and enslaved peoples of color to labor for their economic benefit. The ones who ran the slave trade. They've been running shyt for centuries.

edit: Btw, thanks for the thread link. My first time in the HL forum. I think I may come thru more often. :myman:

In some regard, you are absolutely right: We are free. We certainly have freedoms under the law just like everyone else. We certainly aren't living like we were even 100 years ago.

But you have to help me understand some things:

If we're definitely free, why do we make up 13% of the total US population and 40% of the prison population?

If we're definitely free, why are we still being beat down and killed by the cops?

If we're definitely free, why are so many of us poor, living in impoverished conditions, and reliant on the govt/charities to subsist?

If we're definitely free, why are we dealing drugs and participating in gangs?

If we're definitely free, why do so many of us drop out of high school and so few of us have college educations?

Maybe we're not as free as you think.

Because that's not what freedom means, freedom doesn't mean everything will be allright, freedom means you wake up in the morning and do whatever you want, and the reality is that most black people wake up and do whatever they want

If black people wake up and are not organizing and are engaging in illegal activities then that's on us, it doesn't mean we aren't free tho

word, RZA broke it down a long time ago too, one of the greatest verses evah

Gravediggaz "The Night The Earth Cried" [HD] - YouTube

This dates back to 1555
When they captured the first tribe of men
And piled them in a pen
Fifty feet high
They took em all on a 9000 mile ride
And landed on the shore of a place they never seen before
But read about this inside the ancient books of war
Bonded in stainless steel, stripped of their language
Still survived the anguish of slavery but still remained nameless
Separated to portions and tricked by John Haughty Hawkins
And sold on the auction, taught birth control and abortion
Rulers of the first part became slaves of the worst part
The devils cursed God and reversed God
And turned God into dog and made people search hard
No relief came to the prophet of W.D. Feraud
To a trauma, dropped our mommas off in Bahamas and Barbados
Tobagos, separated us from slave boats
Made our own brothers hate us
From Virgin Isle to Jamaica
Trinidad, Honduras, Haiti, Grenada
Bermuda to Cayman, mental enslavement
You black gods become awaken
At night time you can hear the earth cry
How many more black gods got to die
Before we realize there's no God in the sky
The devil tricked us, that's the worst lie
At night time I can hear the earth cry
How many more black gods got to die
You realize there's no God in the sky
The devils tricked us, that's the worst lie

Most power RZA verse of all time.

Jeru's slavery tale is dope also.

WEEEEELLLLLLLL............

a. It doesn't mean slavery only in the U.S., it means the entire New World/Western Hemisphere..........not long after Columbus accidentally "discovered" the Caribbean....

b. Slavery didn't end everywhere in the New World/Western Hemisphere at the same time, the last two holdouts were Cuba .......

and Brazil.........................................

c. So 1502 - 1888 is 386 years is almost 400 years :manny:, thus the 400 years of slavery is ACCURATE .........throw in Jim Crow years and you go way past 400 years.. :whoo:........
