Why do so many people(mainly black) have a hard time understanding metro areas ?

Wow. I had NO idea there was out of towners that thought like this. Like Jay Z, Nas, Biggie, LL aren't considered NYC rappers by some idiots out there?

Jay and Nas battled to be the king of NYC and they are from Brooklyn and Queens respectfully :heh:

It's not most people but there are a good chunk who think the boroughs are their own city

People most certainly care about metro areas. The fact that you used Miami to disprove that is wild since most people who visit be outside of the Miami city limits.

Also Miami itself only has like 400,000 ppl while the metro has over 5 million.

Yet no one who lives in Miami is going to say it feels smaller than Oklahoma City(which has 700,000 people )
No one who bothers to make the distinction cares about greater metro areas and that’s definitive. We can cut the fluff and get straight to it. Anyone who is involved in a “claim” conversation, because that’s all this is about regardless of what side of the coin you lie, do not care.

This isn’t about visitors or comparing population size. This is about cities and suburbs and if suburbs are part of a city. So we can address my post cause no nikka from Gary has ever told someone from Chicago that he is also from Chicago. No nikka has said “I’m from Gary Indiana” when asked what part of Chicago you from. Greater Chicagoland or not.

They may tell someone in Dallas that shyt to seem like they are from a place they aren’t but they won’t say that in Chicago or any other city respectively.

It's always a funny discussion about this in Atlanta. The city is small as hell. nikkas who live on the east side don't actually live in Atlanta. They usually claim Decatur. But the funny thing is, they don't live in Decatur either. They just have Decatur zip codes. They don't live in a city at all. nikkas who live in Gresham Park, Candler-McAfee, Panthersville, Snapfinger, etc. all live in unicorporated Dekalb county.
Yup. Post office address has zero to do with where you actually live. Tell tale sign is what kind of police cars patrol your area. If it ain't APD and it's a sheriff vehicle, you in the unincorporated county limits.

No one cares about a metro area. When people speak about a city they are talking about Chicago proper, Miami proper, etc…the actual city. The most popular person in modern history is from Gary and not one time has anyone ever said Michael Jackson is from Chicago.
The only reason I disagree is because of Atlanta. It's like the opposite of what you said...nobody cares about or wants to live in actual ATLANTA. Damn near the whole city of Atlanta is a hood. The metro areas are beautiful

When I lived there I considered anything within the perimeter Atlanta except the far south perimeter. But that’s just me personally. Sandy Springs and Dunwoody is as far north as Atlanta proper is technically but I don’t act like Roswell is the same as Lawrenceville in a conversation about Atlanta proper. Same goes as Druid going East and anything West of Vinings

Atlanta and Los Angeles are the 2 cities I consider the exception because they are sprawl cities. Even if this wasn’t the case, your point is kind of a different one entirely. You’re not wrong but it’s a diff conversation.

What makes it different though in comparison to the other cities mentioned (I'm genuinely asking)?

Never heard that before, 5 boroughs is like a globally known description of NY

They have people who are actually from the city constantly acting like Staten Island isn't part of the city, so that makes sense.

Many transplants that move to NYC always feel it is a badge of honor to have "New York, New York" on their official address. Only 1 boro provides that.

nikkas can say “you not in the city” but the government considers it the metro area and, by extension, part of the city :manny:

People can put whatever spin they want on it and feel how they feel. But when it comes to important shyt the metro area is considered and extension of the city

The Staten Island thing is a joke, I don't think anyone from NY actually believes that, they just hate Staten Island :mjlol:

That’s wrong as hell man. When people speak of cities like Atlanta, they mean the entire metro area. The actual city of Atlanta is very small.

As someone who works with the govt I can tell you the govt does not bother with “metro area” semantics outside of third party data. Keyword being third party. City of Chicago doesn’t even have a system to access or the authority to do in anything outside its limits. Example being Beverly, literally the other side of the same street is Evergreen Park. Chicago wouldn’t fix a light pole or dump a public trashcan on the other side of the street because that’s Evergreen’s problem.

The govt works on a city level, county level, state level. At no point is it a “Greater Chicagoland” thing to government until state level and that bolsters my point. That’s the crux of my original point. That this kind of conversation only matters to people trying to claim a city in some social construct way or statistics.
