Why do people limit their careers by getting noticeable Tattoos?

People that do this will most l;likely never get a high paying job in a corporation.

My homie just got a neck tattoo and an arm sleeve. He is doomed to dead end jobs and mediocrity now. He says he wants to become a teacher one day. That wont be happening now...

SOme people have that "Dont give a fukk" approach to life.

But then again if you have great skills most employers wil overlook that. We had a developper here from another company working with us. Brawd had tats everywhere. But she was a master at Java and perl so i doubt her employer cared because of her skill level

Most people get tats when they're young and dumb. They aren't thinking about getting some corporate job at that point. Then when they get older they end up regretting ever getting them.

Thank God I was never dumb enough to get one :myman:

I doubt she will ever get a management role.

First, you can be a teacher with tattoos...shyt, even professors I've had have had tats. Secondly, outside of super tacky tats like on hands and your neck, there are fewer and fewer places where it's a problem, depending on the industry, people give not one fukk (design, tech, start ups). I know guys with work above the elbow, I have one on my ankle and another on my wrist, my managers always ask what the one on my wrist means and keep it moving. In interviews, they're both covered tho

Most people who do that do not realize before it's too late.

When life hits around middle 20's that's when they see

I think its a lil more accepted these days.. Also most of those people don't have aspirations of sitting at desk or cubicle for their careers

But those neck tattos :scusthov:

I like to call them the "grindin for life" tattoos

it really depends on the profession, but corporate america discriminates for a variety of polarizing reasons. tats, piercings, dread locks, birth defects, over weight, or just being unattractive. tats are the most common self inflicted L though...

many employers look down on visible tats, especially if you're customer, client, vendor facing. and even if you get hired, a visible tat can limit how far they'll let you go in the organization. your azz might just be stuck in the mail room, copy room, entry level support, or be an assistant to the assistant admin...forever. :snoop: :pachaha:

the reason people do it though is because they just don't think about it or they don't care at the time. fortunately tats aren't permanent anymore, but they are costly to get removed. i've seen a lot of people i went to school with that have gotten tats removed, cut their locks, or just generally cleaned up their appearance because they realized it has been a limiting factor in their corporate careers. it's not something you think about when you're young and defiant. :manny:

I doubt she will ever get a management role.

Our Developpers typically make more than their own managers so it is safe to assume she not interested :heh:

Now i dont know about any VP type position but then again most people in this industry dont care to be management because thats more bs meetings and less doing what you love

Tattoos are still taboo? :pachaha:

My current boss comes into work in flip flops and has a full fukking sleeve... Sometimes he wears short sleeved collard shirts.. If you're on the west coast in a start-up environment tattoos don't really fukking matter...

Basically... come to the west coast if you're a a skilled business talent, a free spirit, and not a lemming...

When my homie was movin dope thru these streets, he got a tat on his arm that said "DEDICATED TO WORK", because all he was about was movin work.

Fast forward to today after a 12 yr bid, he got a real good job because the guy that interviewed him interpreted the tattoo as him bein dedicated to actual work, like labor n shyt.
