Why do people compare Prince to Michael Jackson so much

Obviously, his Purple Rain album did very well and I guess he has sold an incredible amount of albums. But they were two completely different types of artists really. Prince was more like the guy you see in pretty much every rock band, the frontman who sings and will play guitar, though I know he could play many instruments. Michael was the real entertainer, who could sing and dance very well. He was so good at what he did, that he's almost universally renowned as the best. How many people call Prince the best rockguy of all time, or whatever he would be called? They're not really similar and really, Prince doesn't even deserve to be mentioned next to Michael, no one does. So why the comparisons? Because their two big albums came out close to one another? Discuss.

I would think nikkas would grow out of their Michael fandom that was fostered in their childhood...but they really just become giant Michael stans and don't even realize that musicians such as Prince or Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye made objectively better music...

Off the Wall and Thriller are good albums, but despite how much MJ stans want to bring up that he wrote the majority of the songs in his catalog, all you have to do is look at the liner notes and see how many people contributed in making his music. Prince was one freaking guy in Minneapolis making all his own music and producing others on his own. I think MJ is obviously a talented entertainer--great singer and dancer, but he's ultimately a song and dance man and his music was more of a collaborative commercial effort versus Prince who was a true musical artist.

Prince created his own freaking musical genre and influenced plenty of contemporary artists today from a group as diverse as Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson to Justin Timberlake / Pharrell. He's not comparable to your average multi-instrumentalist.

Don't conflate this. MJ himself influenced contemporary dance. His pool of producers and musicians influenced contemporary music.
