The production of higher quality art assets, lossless audio, quality voice actors among many other things have increased the cost of making a game.

This is Super Mario Kart from the NES

This is that same track reimagined on the Switch for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Yes, we have the technology to create this, but developers need to harness far more tools. Art, by far, takes up a lot of resources, as the programming of bringing all of this together.

See how much Madden cost, that was a long time ago. Still the same price.

Last I checked, Madden 97 on the SNES looked like this

When Madden 18 came out, it looked like this

Staked for inflation (I'm an accountant, this is how I think and what I do) That same 59.99 spent in 1997 is this

When both Madden 97 and Madden 18 dropped, the base game for both was 59.99

Movie prices have definitely increased in price. One of the reasons that prices have relatively stayed the same is because gaming is now a more accepted pastime with a broader reach and other forms of revenue like season passes, merchandise opportunities, etc. However, the cost of admission, as it has largely been since the advent of the NES, is 59.99 for most new games.
Games were $49.99 back during the nes era, bruh :birdman:

Honestly I’d rather games prices jump up to $70-80, then maybe we can get rid of loot boxes and other money grabbing practices.

You'd rather get finessed out of an extra 10-20 dollars in exchange for eliminating money grabbing practices you don't even have to contribute to?

There's a simple answer for the question posed by OP: Consoles cost as much as consumers will pay for them.

Personally, I'm building a new PC. Gonna run me about $900. Why? Because that's how much I'm willing to pay for the (new) components.

Newegg, tigerdirect & Amazon FTW!

Houston to LA like I'm Robert Horry.
They really don't when you think about it. As far as consumer electronics go, I'd say they are on the cheap side in comparison to cell phones, tablets, and laptops.

A $60 game that's 20 hours long is $3/hour much better bang for your buck than going out to the movies. If it has an online component it gets even better. Not that bad IMO

Games are much cheaper IMO, I remember games on the SNES such as Donkey Kong County, SF2A being £65 and that was mid 90s

NeoGeo games were crazy expensive too, apparently, it was the cartridge they used in the arcades.

Games may be more expensive to develop but isn’t it cheaper to produce/distribute now compared to cartridges? Plus more people are buying games, most of these publishers probably get tax credits, and of course you can make back 10x the profit on micros

I have never paid more than £40 for a game. From 1992 til now.

By the way, since 2011 game development have gone down.
