we get that, doesnt mean its not a HUGE risk.

"It wasn't just domestic players, either. With Dirk Nowitzki becoming a superstar and Yao Ming a superstar in the making, teams began jetting off across the world to try to find the next international star, and a 17-year-old with bleach-blond hair named Darko Milicic became an obsession for many who did."

this is the problem.....everyone looking for another Dirk. while overlooking talent in your own country/backyard. I am not saying its stupid. simply that if I were exec, win/lose/draw, give me the American who was a star in HS and a star in college. you may catch lightning in a bottle with an international player but more times than not, the Americans are going to be the bigger and better stars. Look at how easy it is to find a Donovan Mitchell, Bam, Brandon Ingram...all you have to do is follow their HS and College careers. Now that Luka is a star, he will jumpstart this trend again and you will start to see a lot of other passed up USA players become stars while the "next" Luka will likely be a bust.

If Darko went to Denver instead of Detroit he would have probably been a completely different player. Larry Brown shattered his confidence early. Tried to turn him into post up defensive big when he was scouted as the next Dirk. Didn’t help that Darko was drafted to a contender with crazy amount of vets out the gate. He wouldn’t have been as good as Melo, wade, bosh but I don’t think he would have necessarily been considered a bust.

People forget Pistons acquired Sheed after drafting Darko. Tayshaun looked like SF of future. Melo wasn’t a great fit with the kinda team ball the Pistons played. Pistons missed out on Bosh more than Melo. Bosh turned into everything the Pistons wanted Darko to be

I think it was classic not drafting BPA and trying to draft a guy because you think he could be a better fit with the personnel you currently have. That’s all I got. Dumars swung for the fences and whiffed :blessed:

Oden would've been an AS of it wasn't for injuries.
That's the point tho, bro..he was already dealing with injuries before the draft. I guess, especially around that time, teams were still looking for that next big man, I kinda get it, but KD was so far ahead of everybody..it’s still crazy to me

Note to self. Always make sure you have the pick right after the Blazers.

This is a mock draft from 2003 they had Darko as consensus number 2...

NBA Draft.net | 2003 NBA Mock Draft

Interestingly they had D-Wade going home at number 7 to Chicago. This is what was written about Darko and it has to be taken into account he was the youngest player in the draft.
NBA Draft.net -- Darko Milicic profile

The whole Melo to Detroit thing seems like some retrospect, revisionist history shyt. I think Melo stans like to wonder because his legacy would be better.

I love these scouting reports by these experts. They mention the players strengths and then we he's a bust they say it was because he had none on those.

hellz da fukk nah. the TWO biggest names were Bron and Melo. one was the next ATG and the other had one of the greatest college seasons ever. those the two names that everyone knew....so there is no way you can disappoint casuals. how can it be revisionist when Melo is 1st ballot HOFer? DET picks him and even if he busts and Darko becomes great....NO ONE faults that pick. that was the pick they were supposed to have made. who the fukk knew about Darko besides scouts and try hards? if you pick Melo, he busts and Darko has great career then you say why DET fukked up by passing on Darko.... now thats revisionist. Being the next fukking Dirk is a huge damn risk and a lot of fukking luck. I cant believe people in thread lowkey defending this. this was Melo, not Anthony Bennett. and you can say it wasnt just DET/Dumars but they got left holding the bag while others were glad it wasnt them.

Like I said man the draft archives of that time had Darko going second. The Pistons already had a young Tayshaun Prince. The scouts, executives, and analysts opinion is what really matters they make the decisions. The NBA fan back then didn’t know about European players to have them in the discourse. LeBron and Melo they was the culture so of course we saw them as the consensus. shyt ppl still don’t know about the Euros a lot of people was stunned at Kristaps Porzingis selection.

I am not totally against picking Euros...my problem is how HIGH so many of them go, its obvious reaches. Darko, Vesely, Hezonja, etc....they were more hype than anything. what I am saying is what matters, especially in terms of front office/GM's keeping their job is to not be fukking up obvious shyt like that because you will have the fans calling for your head. so dont say the NBA fan opinion of picks dont matter because they put butts in the seat and pays the salaries. Kristaps was justifiable....there was not a Melo caliber player after him on the draft boards, no problem with the reach there....he doesnt compare to Darko. I can see Knicks fans being pissed if they selected WCS or Mudiay because none of those guys were guaranteed a draft spot, they werent consensus top 5...hell they couldve went anywhere in the lottery. I just dont see any fan backlash from DET if Melo gets picked....but after the fact, they got roasted for the Darko pick.

side note: I just swore that Suns were picking Luka...it was kinda surprising to me they didnt given all the circumstances. I think the euro reaches worked in reverse in this instance. Suns org was so terrible...they played it "safe"

Darko was WAY more hyped than the comments in here are acknowledging.
Not quite Luka level hype, maybe like Porzingis level basically right below "future MVP" type hype. It wasn't like they just drafted some random white guy, most ppl had him going that high. Also there was some positional logjam stuff with where would Melo play iirc
