I thought a lot of the states coming up was winner take all

Only Republicans have winner take all this year. RNC wanted to get the contest over quickly so their candidate could pivot to the center and the RNC could start coordinating with the candidate. (They believe that Romney was pulled too far to the right in 2012 and didnt have enough time to get center right)

For the Republicans but the Democratic Party doesn't do winner take all contests in their primaries.

Sanders as a progressive Indie.
Trump as a whatever the hell trump is Indie.

That's only on the Republican side. Bernie has to win a lot of states and win them big.
