Why aren't people offended when media calls Obama the first black president?

Obama identifies himself as a black man and we have to respect his wish. He's bi-racial, but I'm sure no one in his life mistook him for a white kid, so he considers himself black. Who am I to argue with that? I'm just some CAAC on a board.
