As a Hispanic, I would say that people on The Coli don't refer to Hispanics as Native Americans, because most Hispanics themselves in real world situations don't refer to themselves as Native Americans... I would say Mexicans probably have a strong claim to say that they are Native Americans, but then that would complicate things as far as border issues and what land they rightfully have a right to be on.
Their native blood isn’t Apache, Comanche, Neches, etc.

I see it all the time on Thecoli , individual poster's referring to Hispanic's as being spicy Cac's and what not. But most Hispanics I know don't call themselves White, Black, etc they just go by whatever country their family came from. But that's not what the topic is about. The Majority of Hispanics are Mestizo which is mixed Spanish and American Indian. So if according to some of you on Thecoli if Hispanic's are white, shouldn't they be Native American as well?:jbhmm:
:skip:i just left rapid city south dakota last week. i saw a whole wal mart's full of indian indians. reservation indians. and they look nothing like hispanics. and thats precisely the reason hispanics know not to even try to pull that "im mixed with american indian" bs when ice pulls up:mjgrin:

Crossing the entirety of North America (3,000 miles) is nearly the same distance as driving from Paris, France to Iran :gucci: This is to give you an example of the size and scope we’re talking about.....and most Hispanics are from Central and South America which are further away. To say they’re the same is to say a Frenchman is the same as a Middle Eastern person or to make it closer to say a German is the same as an Italian. Which is laughable.

All these people would be considered Mexican. Some are more Native than others, some are more Euro than others.

This show gives some interesting perspective on how some identify.

Some are descended from Spanish Conquistadors and identify more with that.

"Of Bloodlines and Conquistadors"

Of Bloodlines and Conquistadors - Latino USA

“Hispano” is an identity that is unique to New Mexico and Southern Colorado. It defines people who consider themselves to be descendants of the Spanish conquistadors that arrived in the 1500s. Hispanos have lived side by side the Pueblo people for centuries—mixing cultures, identities and even bloodlines. But recently, tensions have risen among the two populations over Santa Fe’s annual conquistador pageant, known as La Entrada, which celebrates the arrival of the Spanish. For some, it celebrates heritage. For others, it’s salt in the wound.

This past September, massive protests in the Santa Fe Plaza have caused both sides to try to come to some sort of an agreement before matters escalate to what have been called “regrettable circumstances.” But is it possible? History tells us it could take decades for these two groups to come to a resolution. Latino USA travels to the community to learn more about this issue.

People use the term "Native American" to describe American Indian tribes as opposed to anyone indigenous to the Americas. It's like "First Nations" in Canada
