STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg stands resolute in his decision to go forward with the New York City Marathon on Sunday.
Bloomberg addressed pleas to cancel the marathon head-on in a press briefing at City Hall.
"If you remember back to 9/11, I think Rudy made the right decision to the run the marathon," Bloomberg said, referring to former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
"I think we need to find some way to express ourselves and show solidarity."
Bloomberg also made reference to the creation of the "2012 ING New York City Marathon Race to Recover Fund," which was established by New York Road Runners.
NYRR is donating at least $1 million, or $26.20 each -- the length of the marathon -- for each of the more than 400,000 expected to run.
