One thing wrong in the article is NY prohibits starting a year late, NYC prohibits it, rest of the state it's might be still allowed. My son is born December 30th when he started kindergarten we were still living in Queens, he had to start that year. We moved to lynbrook midway through 1st grade and they gave us the option of him going back to kindergarten because of his late birthday. We ultimately opted against it because COVID was still a thing so all they had room for was remote learning and not place him in an actual classroom.
White people with money redshirt all the time. They just send them to montessori schools without grade structures then when theyre old enough send them to regular schools, but they get to choose which grade. Then they choose down than where they should be based on age, and have their kid look more advanced than others but in reality theyre just older.

Reeves interview with Derrick Thompson

The one place I disagree with Reeves on is the issue of dating, he doesn't think the college education disparity is a big deal (at least currently). I am surprised by this stance given what has been written on homophily and higher divorce rates occurring when a woman has more education than her husband.

I don’t think this is just a male thing. It’s completely irresponsible for us to push college as a de facto post high school move. It costs too much to go there unprepared or not knowing what you want to do, and IMO, we shouldn’t be asking 17/18/19 yr old kids to essentially be making life altering decorations at that age. It needs to become more of a norm for kids to take a gap year or start college in their early 20’s. We make people feel like losers or weirdos for going to college “late”
I hear ya and I agree.

But the evidence suggests that people who take gap years are less likely to finish their degree.
  • Students who take a gap year are less likely to graduate, even when they enroll in college. Students who take a gap year are about half as likely to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree. The NPSAS statistics are 20.8% vs. 44.2% within four years of enrollment, 34.3% vs. 63.5% within five years, and 41.4% vs. 70.0% within six years.

I definitely believe some people would benefit from a gap year.

I know there's a lot of pressure on young people to feel like they're going somewhere, being productive or on the right path.

No one wants to be voluntarily be that person mindlessly going through working under archiving minimum wage job at 30+.

I know I started out wanting to be a doctor mainly from pressure from family, then after years of stressing out, withdrawing, premed classes because of mediocre grades, I took a gap year, then came back to health sciences, where I found out about the need for health data, and thrived.

But at the end of the day, the main perk of college, is finishing with a degree in hand.

Boys are often coddled and not prepared for this new society. 50 years ago you could be a fukk up, not go to college, and easily land a factory that would not only take care of you but allow you to get married and raise a family. Men worked hard because they wanted things - a new car, a home, a wife, etc. And they often wanted their children to have an easier life, which is why they often ensured their kids could go to college.

Today if you don't go to college your potential earnings are significantly reduced. The auto factory jobs that built the middle class are largely gone now, and the market is flooded with inadequate factory jobs that don't pay enough to raise a family. But they do pay enough for men to be relatively comfortable alone (or with a roommate). A big thing we don't talk about is the lack of ambition many men have now. The things that drove our forefathers - getting a new car, getting a wife, getting a house, etc - no longer drive a lot of men. They're instead content to be single and afford their hobbies...playing videogames, gambling, consuming media (movies, tv, etc). Even that's different from our forefathers. There seems to be far less social drive. Less going to bars, less going to clubs like our fathers or grandfathers. Whenever the old heads are at the barbershop with my barber, they talk about going to the club Thursday through Sunday. Partying, striking out with chicks, getting lucky with chicks, etc. The dudes who stayed home back then to play Dungeons & Dragons, watch tv, or play videogames were a clear minority back then but now? Seems like a majority.

That lack of ambition isn't just college based. Men could easily be going into trades right now at high levels but we aren't. A lot of really good jobs are simply going unclaimed...or they're being claimed by Hispanics who are taking over these fields while black and white guys drift through life.

Yeah Reeves discusses most of this in the podcast episode, and overall most of what you wrote is wrong.

Honestly rereading the article, men need to put up with the fact that they're just not competitive. The woe is me angle just doesn't cut it when you put things in a historical context. If women are dominating the education system we shouldn't tip the scales in the favor of men. We've done enough of that for thousands of years. We're in a new era, deal with it.

Yeah let’s have a generation of angry testosterone filled unemployed incels. That sounds like a good idea. Not a recipe for disaster at all.

I disagree with pushing college being irresponsible , I think it’s a grammar school and parent issue mostly
Majority of Americans should go to college

I do agree with maybe college being something you do in your 20s but I also think it would be best if all males did a mandatory 4 years in the military after high school

And why do you think boys aren’t competitive
Don't know. It just might be the new normal. There's nothing to suggest that the ratio of college graduates must reflect the general population. Let it play out

There have obviously been massive efforts and investments in women’s academic success. Writing it off as the new normal and oh welling the discussion is weird.

There’s been a prolonged underinvestment in men in our society and it will have repercussions for all of us if we don’t address it. It’s almost like the rising fascism and threats of civil war are related to underachieving men being mad at their position in life… almost.
