I will propose a simple answer: asking questions is the only way to flesh out what is true or not.
Just like a judge listens to various sides of the story, one has to listen for inconsistencies. There you will usually find the truth.
Trying to consider the ways which the information could be manipulated is a great way to find inconsistencies.
Other times listening hard enough you will hear one side contradict itself. Obviously two things that disagree cannot both be true simultaneously.
