A failed mascot would be characters/games that were actually geared towards being a mascot, but missed the mark. Like Bonk for Turbo Grafx 16. Or hell, any 2D/3D game that was obviously meant to be an answer to Mario/Sonic, but failed. Like Bug, Bubsy, Gex, etc.

Sonic doesn't make any sense. Neither does Earthwork Jim. Both were praised and highly successful.
