Apathy’s a Tragedy & Boredom is a Crime
Bray had incredible buzz and hype in FCW, which transitioned into NXT, and grew when they gave him the Wyatt Family. The biggest differences between him then and now (besides bad booking) is that he had character growth, he had vignettes that showcased his character's ideaology and gave you an idea of who he was, and what he hoped to accomplish. They helped build this backwoods world he called home. Since getting called up they've done zero of that outside of his debut and the feud with Orton early this year, which unsurprisingly was the freshest thing either guy had done in years until that got bungled too. Without any of those things he's just some guy who says and does spoopy things, rambles about nothing, and loses. There's no character development, no world building, he has no clear motivations or intentions, he's basically just another guy slightly different from everyone else. It's a problem that plagues basically the entire roster, but is even worse with Bray because he's supposed to be this layered nuanced character.
Rusev by comparison had no real expectations of him early on because he didn't really stand out in the beginning. His character was dated, and he was unproven in ring. He was part of a very few select guys who improved after getting called up, as months after his debut he was showing out in the ring and proving he could work beyond the limits of that character and even then he made THAT character work (in big part also due to Lana) because of the strength of his performance and dedication to his character. During that run he had an amazing Flag match with JACK SWAGGER of all people, due almost entirely to his own selling and performance. That match single handledly converted me into a fan of his. I mean, the guy sold his injured ankle so well he cried applying his own finisher
Then just like Bray, he eventually had his character dismantled, all the things that made him stand out taken away from him, and was turned into just another guy, who also like Bray, takes L after L.
Bray had higher expectations as has been said so his drop off was more drastic, so I give him the nod here but it's really a shame both these dudes careers are where they're at compared to where they could be.
