Paula didn't have the pedigree Janet had, she was always going to x'd out simply due to the fact there was more you could do with Janet stylistically. Trying to make them rivals only sped up the process.

And Sade was a musical beast for 2 decades. Vanessa just had a run. The fact that u are disregarding Sade being a beast for 2 decades next to Vanessas lil run in the early 90's tells me your school boy crush got u saying anything. Musically Vanessa fell off by the mid 90's while Sade was still selling multiplatinum in the 2000's.

of course Musically Sade > Vanessa no doubt, Sade is one of my personal goats. I'm talking about the overall marketability. Vanessa was a model, singer, actress/a multifaceted artist. That's why I threw Janet and Whitney in there too. Paula did not have that tool box/was just a pretty face, and wasn't a beast musically like say a Sade who looked and did the part. Even Mariah has a tool box. Paula had nothing else to fall back on, Janet was there and killing in other avenues. Spotlight was on her.
