If you walked past a Black man in their 30's in my neighborhood in the 80's "what's up" was the proper greeting sometimes followed by something like "brotha", with a woman you added shyt like "shorty/girl/sexy" etc. Outside formal things respected elders & seniors were the only ones that got called "sir/ma'am" besides police/judges etc. White people got "hi/hello/hey" type greetings.

-Whenever you hear "back in the day" shyt always understand the person's not speaking for all Black people, it's their personal experience.
