It was never really a thing.so the one drop rule no longer applies? this rule is confusing
ODR type policies came about in the early 20th C after decades of fear from white Southerners that with the massive changes in social structure after full black emancipation former racial buffer groups like Creoles, Melungeons, Lumbees, etc (whose position had become obsolete) would start blending out into the "white" population. Thereby tainting and mongrelizing (and a whole bunch of other bullshyt and supremacist blah, blah, blah) them and further creating a gateway to whiteness for highly mixed people.
After Emancipation racial divisions were simplified; you (your group, community, people) were either white or you weren't. Being a mixed group might bring a slight decrease in degradation but you still were far from the basic human/civil rights that whiteness afforded, plus you were isolated socially, geographically and economically plus you lacked any real political power/impact.
