So do cacs have different taste buds than us? I always see them (cacs) ranking Italian food as the best in the world.

I’m surprised that so many people picked up on this bland food thing because I never noticed it, but it’s true.

There is an actual explanation why WASP New England, and by extension, Europe, has uncharacteristicly bland food. It was because in the 1600s it became a status symbol by the elites to stop seasoning their food....

Back in the Middle Ages, spices were really expensive, which meant that only the upper class could afford them. But things started to change as Europeans began colonizing parts of India and the Americas.

"Spices begin to pour into Europe," explains Krishnendu Ray, an associate professor of food studies at New York University. "What used to be expensive and exclusive became common."

Serving richly spiced stews was no longer a status symbol for Europe's wealthiest families — even the middle classes could afford to spice up their grub. "So the elite recoiled from the increasing popularity of spices," Ray says. "They moved on to an aesthetic theory of taste. Rather than infusing food with spice, they said things should taste like themselves. Meat should taste like meat, and anything you add only serves to intensify the existing flavors."

The shift began in France, in the mid-1600s, adds Paul Freedman, a professor of history at Yale University. "It was a way to also show off the wealth of the French provinces," Freedman says.

The rest of Europe soon adopted this new style. "It's a redefinition of what elegant is," Freedman says. "It's sort of like — in fashion — for a while having more frills, more jewelry was fashionable. But then someone said that a basic black dress with some pearls is much better."

I guess if you’re used to putting this in your stews and rice, Italian food may taste bland.

seasoning is a rough debate though. It’s actually fukked up that it has racial elements because it’s scientifically proven that your taste buds lose effectiveness over time if you are into more intense flavors throughout your life. This is actually one of the basic thoughts behind the fine dining experience. Don’t blow out your taste buds so much that you can’t enjoy simple fresh ingredients. I know people from deeply ethnic cultures like south Asian or African who cannot handle any sort of spice and they like their shyt basic and bland and simple. They’re all “fine dining” foodie people though.

That’s why there are people who can’t handle any spiciness or intense flavoring at all. And then there are people like me who drink strong coffee, drink deep earthy merlots, and I like spicier sauces if the option is available.

Some people aren’t like that and actually enjoy bland ass food because they like tasting the flavors of the simple ingredients.

In Italy’s case those bland people like the taste of the fresh tomato, garlic, basil, etc that you experience in Italy.

That’s just my two cents on this flavor and seasoning debate.

All that matters is satisfying your own preferences and I liked this guys perspective.

Italian food in NYC is actually better than Italian food in Italy, especially pizza.

One thing about America is that we will take some cuisine and then push it to 10 with fats, salt, sugar, seasoning, etc….. to make it unhealthy as hell but the flavor is unmatched. If you are used to a certain type of food over here, when you go get the real thing it will end up disappointing. What that DOES NOT apply to is food based on spices like Indian, Thai, African, etc…. We don’t b*stardize the spice oriented foods correctly.
