Like someone else said, the children probably didn't have a life insurance policy and he still killed them because he didn't want to be burdened with having to take care of them.
He wanted lots of money and no children, he want a rich reset button. Selfish animal didn't care about no debt, nor his own children.

Family annihilators always fascinated me because they're not usually visibly disturbed individuals known for being abusive or people who just "snapped" one day and it's almost always about some money. They sit at the dinner table every night for months or years, smiling at their spouse and kids, all while plotting how they're going to brutally execute them. Imagine teaching your kid how to ride a bike or some shyt, knowing in the back of your mind you're gonna blow his brains out in a few months. 
There's this one dude (can't remember his name atm) who had a big mansion, fancy lifestyle, etc then lost his high paying job. He pretend to go to work for like a year every day until he got a plan together. After the kids left for school one day he shot his wife from across the breakfast table, went upstairs to kill his mother and then caught and killed each one of his 3 kids as they came home from school. But not before he told their friends/neighbors the whole family was going out of town for an undetermined amount of time.
Anyway, dude kills them, takes a shower then a nap, packs a bag and goes on his way. IIRC he wasn't caught for like 20 years. When the cops found him he had a whole wife and a new set of kids.
