Somebody has to work those poppy fields.
But yeah, it's advantageous to have many kids in a more agrarian society. One, you need free labor to work the land and two, you have more people supporting you in old age.... Law of averages in case one or more kids are fukk ups and can't afford to take care of you.
In developed countries, you don't really need kids for labor or as care takers during old age. We have Social Security and if you are wise, individual retirement investments that can have you living a very good life in your golden years.
When you think about it in real terms, kids are usually a drain on your resources and terrible investment.
