Couple random thoughts....
1. People are getting bad CGI confused with dated CGI. For example, "The Scorpion King" has bad CGI. People thought it was trash from day 1. "Blade 1" has dated CGI....it was hot at the time but since CGI has improved it looks pretty bad. I can't really hold dated CGI against a movie.
2. "The Mist" CGI was considered bad from day 1, but nobody held it against the movie because they cut the budget when Frank Darabont refused to change the ending. Regardless of how you feel about the ending, he stuck to his own vision.
