70's were the overall GOAT era IMO. Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Earth Wind and Fire (:krs:) George Duke, the Ohio Players, Bootsy Collins, Curtis Mayfield, Willie Hutch, Shuggie Otis, Tower of Power, Rose Royce, Sly and the Family Stone, the Sylvers, P-Funk, Funkadelic, etc.
(On the rock side of things, Queen, Todd Rundgren, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Yes :gladbron: )

The 60's would come up next. James Brown, Sam Cooke, the Temptations, the Stylistics, Smokey Robinson, Hendrix... :ahh::ahh: :ahh:
Cream, the Beatles, the Doors, Status Quo, the Electric Prunes:ahh:

The 80's? MJ and Prince are both GOAT contenders. Other than that, Rick James, Cameo, Maze ft. Frankie Beverly, and Loose Ends are pretty dope.
Electro music like Kraftwerk and Yellow Magic Orchestra were putting out piff then :youngsabo:
Rush is also one of the GOAT rock bands :salute: :salute: :salute:

Hip hop peaked with the late 80's/early 90's IMO. All the negativity that took over after that ruined it for me, outside of underground music.

70's > 80's = 60's > 90's >>>>>>> today

The thing about the 80s is that most of the best artists were more solo starts in comparison to the 60s and 70s where it was groups....

not that that means anything just saying....

but to add....jody watley even though she released two records in the 80s at the end in 87 and 89 deserves a mention.... not mentioned that often

ironic especially since she had one of the first(someone correct me) female R&B features on a hip hop song...."Friends" with Rakim

I agree. From 04 to 09 was the worst years for me musically. No new talented artists of any genre making mainstream noise, trash that was pushed-even when it wasn't selling, gimmicks at an all time high, the transition from physical to digital media that was rather ineffective, and c00nery was at an all time high with the combo of southern rappers acting dumb AND the waning east coast gangsta making noise on the street level.
