To me, the announcing is a part of what's missing in WWE right now.
Some people say the booking is the problem. I beg to differ, I think a much bigger problem is the lack of character. I know some people love the idea of it being more 'realistic' than it was in the past, where it's not as colorful, kid-friendly, over-the-top or whatever the fukk... and that's a cool component of the programming. But it's also something sorely missing. Lord Alfred Hayes, terrible as he was on commentary, had more personality than most of the main people calling the matches now. Byron Saxton woulda been a backstage guy and not much more. Tom Phillips' voice would work if he didn't talk in such a monotone way. Cole is always gonna be Cole, and he doesn't even seem to give a fukk anymore. And of course, Vince is in the headsets so most of this lies on him more than anyone else. I agree you gotta adapt to the times, and I'm sure a lot of the old ways might not fly today, but I just went way back and watched Survivor Series '89. To look at how those characters and announcing was treated back then, and to watch it now- I can't see how Vince doesn't see a need to inject some life into some of this shyt they do today.
