To all the people who insist upon using rings to rank individual players, do you just not understand what "basketball is a team game" means?

He got 2 rings... big deal.

we all know who is better between the two players.

LeBron already shyts on him statistically and been to the Finals the same amount of times.

Sure they do...when their favorite player is on the wrong side of the rings debate. You never hear a MJ stan bring up Russell or even Kareem's rings do you?

the best players usually win for that team.

you dont think so? :dwillhuh:

Magic and Bird were the best and 2nd best so they won most the time in the 80's

MJ and Hakeem were the ones ranking up the championships because they were the best and 2nd best

Shaq, Kobe, and TIMMY won 8 of those 10 years in the 2000's

coincident?

Not a coincidence however it was circumstantial. If Magic and Bird played at the same level on shytty teams would that somehow make them worse? Was Mike not the best until he got Scottie and Horace on his side? That is the problem with the ring argument, regardless of how good you are individually you still need others to get over the hump. Should a person who doesn't have those others be discounted purely because of his situation?

I'm not saying that rings aren't a factor when ranking players, but it has to be put in proper context. The number of rings that a player has is not the end all be all as far as where that player ranks amongst his peers. Mike was the best individual player in the league for 3-4 years before e won his 1st ring. It's the same thing for Lebron right now. He didn't just become the best player in the league last night, he's been so for the last 4-5 years. I'm just saying lets use common sense, drop the agendas, and start being completely honest.

a lot of times when you are considered the best, players are willing to play for you. Its easier to just put pieces around a superstar talent than it is to build a team like the 2004 Pistons.

That's the popular narrative however if that is possible why didn't MJ elevate Brad Sellers level of play? It's a little easier to "elevate" the level of play of a Worthy or a Kareem or a McHale or Parrish or a Pippen or a Wade wouldn't you say? You really gonna act like the abilities of the teammates had nothing to do with it? A great player can make it teammates better no doubt however a great player can only do so much on his own. He's gotta have something to elevate. You didnt' answer my question though. Would you look at Magic and Bird differently if they did the same exact things just without multiple HOFers around them and therefore less team success? Was Mike not the best until Pippen came along to be "elevated"?
