Whenever I hear somebody attack rap as simplistic or an easy art form....

Because other rappers didn't have this idea before Jay said it, you think..?!

It's not a matter of other rappers having the idea, it's when the poster boy of your genre blatantly days he's a sellout and just looking to make money does the credibility of the genre go down. If the person who is considered the best/king of your genre and he doesn't even take it seriously, what are others going to think.

Again it's not a matter of what other rappers may think. It's like The Red Hot Chili Peppers saying a comment that Foster The People said. Who's words are going to hold more weight. When your at the forefront and want to be the KING of you genre and want your genre to be respected, you have to watch your words.

In closing, do you think John Starks words hold more weight than Jordan's in the basketball world.

So "dumb shyt" has "swag"

I'm not sure what you're saying here

I usually show these people the lyrics to a gucci and flocka song and it turns them right around.

You think people who would say that are going through
The history of hip hop listening to lyrical masterpieces

Or hear some garbage mainstream in passing on the radio

explain to your co-worker how rap is the most lyrically complex out of all the musical genres.

It really is....I mean any English professor in the 21st century could literally use some of the best songs as instructional tools......so much poetry with literary terms from the best lyricists.....

Metaphors, similies, alliteration, hyperbole, paradoxes, allusions, anachronisms, parables, personification, etc etc etc ....tons of rhymes schemes.....

HIP HOP IS RICH IN LITERARY DEVICES/TERMS Literary Terms and Definitions

It's not that other genres dont' do this, but you can find up to a dozen or so devices in one hip hop song......my 4th or 5th career option would be to be a professor that breakdowns Hip Hop songs , and points out the literary devices in them and the overall meaning to them.... :whoo:

I love this music/art form :to:

rap IS simple, the most difficult thing about the music industry is actually MAKING IT, its like being a politician, but rap is simple, this doesn't make it LESS HOT though

how is it simple?

are you talking about the lyrics or the production? or both?

it really depends which examples you using

anyone can cherry pick a gucci mane or a lil b and selectively use them to make a case that rap is simplistic

but that shows they have an agenda

why not use an elzhi or a royce da 59

because it wouldnt work

A friend of mine actually does this as his specialty in his English post-graduate studies. Semiotics of Hip-Hop and the like. Conversations are always fun.
