NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A lot of schools spend countless hours trying to stop bullying. But some question if they are sending the right message.

It started as a simple look at bullying. University of Texas at Arlington criminologist Seokjin Jeong analyzed data collected from 7,000 students from all 50 states.

He thought the results would be predictable and would show that anti-bullying programs curb bullying. Instead — he found the opposite.

Jeong said it was, “A very disappointing and a very surprising thing. Our anti-bullying programs, either intervention or prevention does not work.”

The study concluded that students at schools with anti-bullying programs might actually be more likely to become a victim of bullying. It also found that students at schools with no bullying programs were less likely to become victims.

The results were stunning for Jeong. “Usually people expect an anti-bullying program to have some impact — some positive impact.”

The student videos used in many campaigns show examples of bullying and how to intervene. But Jeong says they may actually teach students different bullying techniques — and even educate about new ways to bully through social media and texting.

Jeong said students with ill intentions “…are able to learn, there are new techniques [and gain] new skills.” He says students might see examples in videos and then want to try it.

According to Jeong, some programs even teach students how to bully without leaving evidence behind. “This study raises an alarm,” he said. “There is a possibility of negative impact from anti-bullying programs.”

Jeong and others like him believe that until the message delivered by anti-bullying programs improves — some programs may be doing more harm than good.

I am surprised by these results. Maybe we need professional marketing people who sell Starbucks and Apple products to head the anti-bullying initiatives and 'sell' good behavior to bullies.

This probably illustrates how bullying is a symptom of deeper problems that can't be resolved with a few school assemblies.

:lupe: I would be willing to bet that mental health therapy decreases bullying. If bullies had to sit with some boring school therapist for a hour twice a week they would probably say :whoa: I'll chill. But that's probably too expensive. Not worth the investment to save a couple of weak-minded kids lives. :beli:

:shaq2:Or maybe we need parents to start being parents and stop looking to the state for answers...
Might be one of the few times I agree here.

The whole anti-bullying campaign that has taken root in this country in the past few years actually kinda sickens me and I feel like it speaks volumes about the laziness of not only the parents but the educators and politicians in the US, with regards to education.

If your kid is being fukked with in school, GO DOWN TO THE fukkING SCHOOL and meet with the teachers and the principal and address the fukking situation, and if it continues, you need to take it a step up whether it be with your district reps or your political representation because clearly there is either a problem with management or the system itself.

And if your kid is a problem child who is disrupting the learning process of other children then the problem is YOU.

Both the current laws and the "parental responsibility" argument are based on the untenable methodological individualism that is common to both libertarians and conservatives. Obviously these programs don't work, but that's because they treat the bullies like rational or autonomous individuals to be dissuaded or dealt with individually through disciplinary action instead of addressing the failings of the educational institutions to promote learning social and emotional intelligence and their related skills (and they are skills) along with learning facts from textbooks. Atomistic, individual attempts at cultivating behavior or making a child accountable, either on the part of the school or parents, can't defeat a toxic environment. This should be obvious to anyone who grew up in the hood. You can't expect targeting the symptom to fix the problem.

You do realize he meant liberalism in the old sense, right? That includes modern conservatives and libertarians. Nietzsche despised classical liberalism.

Your wrong for all you have to do is see the differences in Nietzsche and Marx philosophy... One stressed social revolution, the other stressed the revolution of self....
