Persona 2: Innocent Sin's ending is very bittersweet. Same with Soul Hackers.

Yooo this ending made my young ass depressed af lol.
Yep. I can distinctly remember feeling down about it ending as a kid and I didn’t know why. Which I guess is what OP is trying to get at but when you really think about it everything about Mario 64 is nonsensical. I honestly think Nintendo music (and Japanese game scores generally) has something to do with it. shyt hits differently.

When I actually finished RDR. I'm shocked at how many folks didn't know the game wasn't technically over when you took control of Jack. That "real" ending? Jesus. Such a tragic story. Those end credits didn't help.

I don't get that feeling because I don't view games that kind of way or finish games with no replay value, if I find myself forcing myself to play a game and just delete it and move on because it's worth my time, games are meant to be played, so you can get that feeling anytime you feel like just by playing the game

The thing about the golden era of gaming, stories in games were side stuff like seasoning on food, you would have to read the back story in the instruction book or they would have some brief synopsis at the beginning scrolling up the screen, but mostly the story was told with no words just visual cues, and you could use your imagination to feel in the blanks or even create your own story, that's why media suffers today it's been decades since kids had to use their imagination no music, movies, everything has suffered from it, and games have become interactive movies not games.

If you can't just turn a game on a play it without worrying about any type of story progression it's not a real game to me.

I can't speak for games but as far as movies, one of the last was Avengers: Infinity War, end of the movie half of your favorites are gone to who knows where, good guys do not win, Thanos has completed his mission, whole planet is left a mess. The ultimate cliffhanger and gut punch IMO. Had to wait damn near a year for the sequel to find out what happens.

Legit always feels like saying goodbye to friends for real. Still the GOAT videogame trilogy, imo. I don't think any game has made me feel quite as hallow over the conclusion of a game as ME has on each and every single playthrough. Last one hit really different considering I'd been nearly purely renegade up until the last third of the game. Something about Shepard softening up to a near Paragon towards the end in order to prioritize those around him as opposed to the mission and coming to terms with his mortality (I took the ending where there's no chance for his survival) that made the renegade playthrough beautifully depressing.

The Last of Us 2 should have never existed. The ending to the first one was perfect. The second one does a full on assault to Ellie's character and uses Joel to prop up some retconned jobber nobody liked that didn't even exist in the original game.

I mean it was a very well made game but at the same time it's wasn't really appreciated by a lot of people.

That game is the poster child for development hell. It's shaping up to be a train wreck. Most games don't go through 2 project leads and 2-3 restarts and come out a good product on the other end.

You didn’t even finish the game. Wtf

I agree with @winb83 sama:mjgrin:

Witcher 3 and Trails to Azure were the last two games that I recently played that gave me this feeling.

Legend of Zelda: OoT made me feel legit empty. Finished the game on an early Saturday morning, and just was :dwillhuh: :wow: for the entire weekend.

Like, I put in almost 100 hours of work getting everything, finished all 10 dungeons, jumping through 2 time periods to set things right, and the main character Link himself never saw the good future of Hyrule after slaughtering Ganondorf. That made me feel all :to: because not every hero sees the results of years of selfless hard work pay off....

Cold Steel IV left me feeling that way. I mean everybody who was anybody was accounted for.

I beat Azure after Cold Steel II but Before III so it really didn't feel like an ending. IV felt like it closed the book on everything before it.

All those clickers as Abby wore me down. At that point I had played the game a longer playtime than the entire first game. Part of the problem is the game reached a crescendo as Ellie and everything resets and you're forced to go through the other side of the events. I didn't care about Abby or those kids or any of her people. They were just some a$$holes I killed on the other side of the story.
