When do we realistically think demand for the PS5 will become normal?

probably wont be normal for a couple more years and i agree with Greenhornet; this cycle could have been pushed back because the software isnt really ready anyway. none of these games absolutely need new hardware to exist right now (with the exception of ratchet and clank).

They would have lost out on millions if they delayed these systems. I don't understand this argument, it makes zero fukking sense.

im not speaking from the POV of a company. im talking as a consumer. their money doesnt pay my bills

From a consumer POV, you wouldn't have multiple PS5 exclusives, the dualsense, and much faster loading times with improved performance - so the argument still makes zero sense.

the argument is that to me, nothing so far is a big enough step up that it was absolutely needed right now. things could have been delayed and done better and cheaper. the fact that even AAA games are still being made compatible for the old systems and a game like returnal is possibly the GOTY is a testament to that. the experience is only a downgrade in graphics and some seconds on load time. it's not like going from PS2 to PS3.

So you wanted a bigger generation jump that was also simultaneously cheaper??? :russ:

Come on breh - nevermind you could make this argument for every single console ever released; every thing can be delayed by a couple of years to ensure better performance.

This generation is likely to drag out further to compensate for the fact that the first couple years of it systems were mostly unavailable. The highest of profile games have to be either multigeneration or pushed back to reach an acceptable install base.

Covid fukked up the chip count and delayed software production - couldn't have been avoided.

The mid gen hardware update is what is really going to further lengthen this generation though.

Btw this argument about judging generation jumps purely on graphics is only going to lead to disappointment - graphics have improved so much to the point that further improvements are constantly diminishing and nowhere near as noticeable as 20 years ago.

Game sales are mostly front loaded. If a game releases now at launch it's likely to sell the most it ever will. Most games don't have the legs of a Nintendo title or GTA V. They don't want to put out these expensive AAA games limited to only reach a small audience. The compromise is they put them on PS4 also to reach more gamers or push them back to when the install base is higher. Even if there wasn't a mid generation refresh the first 2 years of this console generation are mostly shot. That just means this console generation will go on longer to make up for that.
