When did you realize that music wouldn't be your career & just a passion/hobby?

I've been struggling with this a lot lately over the past year, knowing I have talent but seeing the game for what it is and especially where someone like me would fit in it. I been feeling old and young at the same damn time. I'm not that old but in the 3-5 years it actually takes to be somebody I will be. Older (and some young if you had this experience) brehs could you share the tipping point for you when you were in a similar space and how you were able to keep your fire for music lit.

Honestly, I've boiled down to just wanting to DJ. Honestly, I have a great career, married, kids, etc. Honestly, it could be anything. I play around with the hobby here and there but one day, to rock a crowd and someone come up to me and be like, dope set or watch someone shazam a track that I'm playing, that will make everything official and validated in my eyes.

You mean you once wanted to rap and now would be cool DJing? Or you always wanted to DJ?

I just wanted a place in music somehow. I think like a lot of us, we used to record ourselves flowing over instrumentals. I was decent. Then I went to try my hand at beat making, average to below average. Undeterred, I've gotten myself legit DJ equipment, like the shyt that Martix Garrix and others use in concerts. I got that shyt. That said, my strength has always been creating playlists and setting moods. DJs is that and I listen to so much music that with what I said in the first post, to rock a crowd. Like when I'm in the car with my wife and I play something new, she would be like, who's this. We've been together for so long that I put her and a friend up on Drake with Best I Ever Had. I just have a knack for knowing what, for lack of a better term, works in music.

:whew: glad I discovered a lane
At the end of the day it's all about perception
You're prolly one of those Katz that when wanting to be a rapper, ur goal didn't set u apart from others who wanted to be a rapper
This leads to you coming up with run of the mill ideas that don't connect with the people.
Ur goal and reason has to be greater than the rest, so once ur perception changes, greater and more unique ideas come
My goal with my music, without being too detailed for reasons I can't disclose, is to create a new world new universe that people on earth can visit and be influenced by and in turn the world is changed for what I believe to be the better.
Vague I know, but I gotta be :yeshrug:
At any rate, point is when ur reason is great enough, great things will manifest
If that's not u then u can do it as a hobby. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm just giving u some knowledge fam.
Good luck

It's definitely all about perception. And my goal is self-expression. But if run of the mill ideas were the issue, 85% of nikkas we hear would not be heard.

Edit: Recently a stronger "goal" of speaking on rap culture and perception itself has emerged...basically talking about the very reasons I feel I'll never ascend.

Nah whos run of the mill
Kendrick isnt
Cole maybe
Lil yachty isnt
Lil uzi isnt
young thug isnt
lil b isnt
Dram isnt
etc etc.

These artists bring something fresh and different to the table whether it be the music they make, how they present themselves or their look...there is something different bout them
I listened to you mixtape a while back i think it was called hoop something
and saw one of your music videos and sorry to say but you were your average run of the mill punchline rapper who offered nothing to connect to the people...so if thats not what you look to do maybe you should just make it a hobby.....but the last thing u need is this attitude where ur like "im too good for this game" cuz ur not, that attitude will keep you at the same level as artistry as you've always been because you assume u are too good

Realised I wanted to be a local MC plus I don't want any exposals to come and haunt me in the future. Kind of afraid of doing those freestyles at radio shows like Westwood and Sway freestyling in front of people is not my strong point I heard you can kinda cheat with some pre written material but you don't get a choice of beats so it really does have to be a freestyle.

I gave a lot of well known Boom Bap artists/producers my mix/demo tape no response I don't wanna come across as a dikkrider either so i message them like once twice maximum... I have good feedback from friends and casuals but that's not enough. I've done a few open mic nights been in legit studios you name it.

And I can't reveal my identity here either because some of the comments I've made here will come back to bite me in the ass. So I can't get feedback from unbiased very critical coli brehs.

At this point I'll be grateful if I can open up for my favourite MCs at their shows

I honestly don't feel like I match the corporate world either (degree or not) and the recruitment process for me is just as difficult what with the test centres and interviews.

Kendrick and Cole aren't...maybe Thug. The rest are to me as far as the art itself...their presentation and look is the draw which is exactly I know. And you're talking about Defensive Drills which was intended to be that kind of tape because the first 2 were personal. I learned a lot from that project, not all positive but lessons nonetheless. Tape 4 will go back to personal shyt but I'm much more in tune with myself then the 17-20 year old me...I'm excited about what I'll create since I've grown but I do not have faith in people. I don't necessarily think I'm too good but too different...the everyman era died in 2011.

Dave East made it at like 28, keep pushing breh, I'm 24 and I"m still pushing, your voice is dope, if the right person hears you I could see some shyt poppin, time will just make your flow smoother and bars hit harder, save up money for promo too
