While the combat never topped DBZ in my opinion, the characters, plot twists, and drama were all superior.

I'll take the combat in Yu Yu Hakuso because it had a steady sensible progression.
I still say that in DBZ Goku never looked quite as powerful as he did when he first got to Namek or during his fight with Frieza.
The combat in DBZ was absolute shyt. One thing from that show I did not like

Yeah Yu Yu Hakusho definitely had more fights filled with finesse and emotion but I'm a sucker for planet busters.
I see where you're coming from with Goku but I guess they wanted to focus on other characters. Its why they pushed Gohan so much during the Android/Cell saga. Having Goku arrive just in the nick of time to save everyone like in the Saiyan/Ginyu Sagas would have been weak.
Goku/Vegeta vs Kid Buu was DBZs last hurrah IMO. That fight was just so intense, and Vegeta finally became a changed man. And plus we can honestly say that for once Goku didn't save the universe, the universe saved the universe.

Watching it as a kid I was amazed. See Pokemon was the only other anime I had watched before that and DBZ absolutely shat all over it.To each his own.
Don't get me wrong. I loved it for what it was but once you start watching these other animes, especially shyt like Rurouni Kenshin, you realize how shyt the fighting on DBZ was.
DBZ's problems as far as combat,to me, came when Powel Levels got thrown in the bushes around the Cell Games and leading into the Buu Saga.
Back to back immortal villains tho
it was just lazy. Both could regenerate no matter how much damage they took and that was driven home to the viewers throughout both of the Sagas. But they both die in similar fashion, 1 final attack with a bunch of energy put into it in a last ditch effort. Gohan's Kamehameha or Goku's Spirit Bomb...but going by how the story was toldboth should have just regenerated from both attacks like usual. I mean Kid Buu was going around blowing up multiple planets, including himself.
At least in Yu Yu Hakusho, you understood that everybody had their limits and the villains also had their own plateau. They at least made it seem like they were trying to win with skill and within their own limitations(Yusuke knowing he can only fire so many shots per day and developing his fighting style around that, etc.) DBZ...it became guy with an unknown well of power against another guy with unknown well of power + the infinite lives code enabled.
But once again, I loved DBZ but you can tell at a point he just wanted it to end after the Cell Saga or wanted to take it in a different direction. I remember the talk of Gohan being the new lead, which could have possibly lead to Goten and Trunks becoming SSJ in a more believable way, Videl could have played a Bulma/Chichi-like role. A lot more could have been expanded upon.
