The thing that every Saiyan had was the ability to get exponentially stronger after ever tough battle they encountered. THAT was why Frieza murked the entire planet and kept Vegeta so close to him.

it was something every sayian was capable of if pushed too far. trunks and goten turned so easy because they needed a reason to have more super sayians

Every saiyan at birth has the chance to go SSJ if they trained enough and had the proper conditions to go ssj. For example, vegeta had the power but didn't have the need (stopped caring) to unlock the power to go ssj. Once he stopped caring about being stronger than goku it triggered within him and he was able to go ssj.

Goku and Vegeta were ssj's at the time their sons were conceived. It's logical they passed the trait down to their sons which made it easier for them to go SSJ as opposed to gohan who was conceived when goku had a PL of roughly 250 at the end of dragonball.

Saiyans get exponentially stronger after recovering from near death experiences. Goku & vegeta went through so much shyt and training under 10x+ gravity and letting their rage and anger explode in circumstances that called for them.

Before Frieza threw them in the bushes the saiyans were the strongest in the universe. They were barely tryna get stronger than each other.

Even if you want to say there was a "SSJ gene" that's something Goku and Vegeta would of had from the beginning. Ultimately that means Gohan should have been just as strong as Goten and Trunks at the same age if you're gonna go with the "SSJ gene" argument.

goku had a PL of roughly 250 when gohan was conceived he was stupid weak back then. Each saiyan has the ability to go ssj but again it's circumstances and intense training that unlocks it. Most saiyans were killed by frieza and only 4 were left. goku, vegeta nappa and raditz. radits and nappa died to early achieve their power. vegeta and goku had enough training and circumstance to achieve their goal.
