Real Talk
Every since them American remakes of those Japanese horror flicks were created in 1999
even Boyhood and Eighth grade got R ratingsYeah there are cases when it works and cases when it doesn't. A PG 13 ghost movie is fine in my book. Ratings themselves are pretty arbitrary because they're given out by the MPAA, who seemingly picks and chooses with no rhyme or reason when something is an R or something is PG 13. The Conjuring has little blood and practically no gore but they gave it an R rating due to "terror"; essentially saying the movie is so scary it has to be rated R
On the flip side, if Terminator 2 came out today, it would be PG 13 easily. It's no more violent than the dark knight
I've heard a few filmmakers talk about the ratings board and ratings in general and how they really make no sense.

Poltergeist is PG
It’s all right.A good PG13 horror film is Mama with Jessica Chastain.
"Gremilins" (horror comedy) is one of the movies that directly led to the creation of the PG-13 rating system, along with "Temple of Doom".
Also:
It's not a horror movie, but Planet of the Apes was rated G when it was first released.
If you did a shot for shot remake of it now with the same script ("God damn you all to Hell!") It would be automatically PG-13
Those Critters posters used to scare the fukk outta me at the old video store. A kid shouldn't be subjected to that
