when did african americans esp. hood nikkaz start with the dreadlocks thing

I say the popularity if dreads in the hood directly corresponds to the rise in lil Wayne's popularity. Most nikkas in the hoods with dreads look straight bummy like chief keef. They don't even keep the look up like the Afrocentric earthy cats who rocked dreads since whenever.

I agree. I hate to say it, but most nikkas (the trendy follower types) didn't start rocking dreads until Wayne blew up. Problem is, it takes YEARS to get your dreads to that level. That's why all these kids walking around looking like Keef (Keef included...he probably grew dreads because of Wayne as well).

I remember in the early-mid 90s, Snoop and Bone popularized the braids/cornrows for the thug nikkas, but I think Iverson made em mainstream.
