when did african americans esp. hood nikkaz start with the dreadlocks thing

for years dreadlocks has been mostly synonymous with jamaican and caribbean rastas or afro centric AA's here and there but when did it become cornrows for hood nikkaz? as far as i could tell it started with little john in atl then spread to florida and throughout the south but i might be wrong enlighten me.

That may have been when you noticed, but locks have been around for MUCH longer than that in the AA community, ESPECIALLY in Florida.

I can't really speak for any other region but I remember uptop cats rockin dreads in the late 80's/early 90's, cats like Das Efx and LB fam were the first urban type famous people I remember havin dreads, even nas and in think the Gza had em at one point, but even in the hood I grew up in cats had been rockin dreads prolly before I was born. I know quite a few older homies from around the way that have had locs for as long as I can remember

i don't mean rappers or celebrities but everyday dudes in mass like how it is down south and even in chicago nowadays. i grew up in brooklyn in the 90's and that shyt was only rocking mostly with some Caribbean dudes everyone else for the most part was going to the barber every week for a cut.

I don't think you guys get what TS is asking. He's not asking who was wearing locks first (of course people in Florida, NYC, the world) were wearing locks. TS is talking about what it became a very popular thing nationally, and that would be around the time of Lil Jon and those guys coming up.

I understood what he meant, and I still think that locks were popular before the early 2000's.

Not everyone is going to agree on this though.
