I think it came in the early mid 80’s as a natural transition from the 70’s when cats grew their hair out with really no regard to their line up

Absolutely not, there were young barbers around since "barber school" was a thing. People outside of the NYC area were getting "edge ups" in the LATE 80S EARLY 90S, on the regular. They were not just for entertainers. Nor were designs.

Exactly I am an 80s kid and I remember in the late 80s and early 90s my pops taking me to get hair cuts and I got line ups.

The difference is in the late 90s and early 2000s kats started to get them razor line ups. Which got popular from the famous folks.

Either the NOI or dudes coming home from the military is what caused the shift.

I disagree with the takes in this thread about Steve Harvey. Perhaps in other parts of the country that's what did it, but if you look at early 1980s vintage NY pictures, you will see dudes with beehives cleanly shaped up.

Yeah the line up started with steve harvey is a joke. As I mentioned I was getting line ups as a kid in the late 80s. I specifically remember cause that was the worse part of the hair cut and my pops would.be like you better hold still boy before you line gets fukked up...:mjlol:

As far as I'm concerned wilt started it

There is a difference between "first to ever do it" and the "one who made it the norm"
This thread will go on forever if ya'll keep trying to find who was the first to ever have a crisp hairline.
The fact is after Steve it was no longer acceptable to not have a crisp lineup. all these people from the 70s and 80s were exceptions to the rule.
Now a nikka look dusty without one. back then even though some people did, the average non hip/ square black person was still rocking with their natural hairline pre Harvey. Even a square nerdy ass black folks have crisp lineups now.

Early lineups existed during the vietnam war, peep breh on the left. So the lineups we know today had to come from the time period directly following 1975.
