I was watching Ethan Page's interview with Chris Van Vielt and he said he considers himself more of an entertainer like The Rock more than an athlete. This got me to thinking about what I like in a character.

Katsuyori Shibata is one of my favorite wrestlers despite how his career ended. I always gravitated to the athletes/shooters even if they didn't have much of a personality because of the mat work.

I feel like a Kurt Angle is a once in a generation talent that had the right mix of a great entertainer combined with his amateur wrestling.

Thoughts?

I'll say entertainers as long as it's understood that "entertainment" doesn't mean pure comedy. Intense wrestlers who seemed legit tough and/or legit crazy (and whose matches told a story) were always the most entertaining to me.

If wrestlers happened to be athletic and that fit with their characters and the storytelling in their matches, that's cool but on its own, a wrestler being athletic isn't really that important.

In an actual match, I hate athletic offence that doesn't look like it hurts. Lance Storm was a great athlete but most of his offence didn't look like it was hurting anybody.

Entertainers are the ones who got me into wrestling. It's the charisma, promo, and mic skills that keep me interested. I like the new style of wrestling but every match doesn't need to be 15 minutes. Guys like HBK, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, were amazing. Bret Hart and Daniel Bryan are good on the mic but they're not superstars though.

A combination of both, somebody who can bring it in the ring and on the mic. You don't have to be an in-ring technician but as long as you can be entertaining in the ring like The Rock it's cool cause some wrestlers have these big complex characters but when the bell rings I could care less cause their matches are horrible, like Bray Wyatt.

A little of column A, a little of Column B but I drift more towards Athletes these days.

Who would everybody's top 5 in either category be though?

the entertainment side got me into it when i was in 1st grade.
the athletic side kept me into it by the time i hit 5th grade & beyond.

but i prefer the combination of both.
and as for the OP, i feel like ethan page and the rock fall somewhere in the middle.

Average wrestler and top notch entertainer can be a goat. Top notch wrestler and nothing else is straight to midcard.

I gotta disagree with you about Bret and Bryan. The knock on them was that they were great technicians but terrible promos. Also, they're somewhat known outside of wrestling
