I couldn't cast a vote... I eventually wanted a doctorate - but i don't see the fukking point in that. It wont make you rich and I hate school. School pretty much sucks..... but I still have 20 months of post 9 11 left and that's like 1200/month in living expenses i need to collect on. So I'm looking for something like private flying license or something cool to do for 20 months.

Should have left HS gotten some certs-- worked my way up. Universities are a waste of time if you have enough drive.

I will say this, I do always get slightly bothered by that "college wasn't worth it" crowd that went to college and didn't apply themselves or try to intern or gear themselves towards getting a job. College is worth it if you know what you're doing almost regardless of the degree if you have a very specific drive and know what you want. I don't know any of my friends who regrets going to college, but they are also all employed.

why get annoyed at another person's experience?

nobody was telling teens that college will only pay off if you pick a specific career that has adequate growth and active recruitment by the time you graduate. all they do is push college as the next step for practically everybody regardless of major, which is also why there was a balooning of so many different kinds of majors that have no practical application to a job. they built college into a boom industry and kids went for it, and got left with a bunch of debt and poor job prospects. who wouldnt gripe in that situation. you cant even get rid of the debt in bankruptcy. there's going to be a whole generation of screwed up people out here. the kids after them will see this generation as a case of what not to do, then the problem may correct itself.

This question doesn't respond to the sentiment in my post. The point is the people telling people that college overall is not worth it. Saying people need access to better information and that college is not worth it are two different things. We're on the same page.

im assuming these people are saying it's not worth it for them, and if your situation does not line up with theirs, then it would be pretty much assumed that their comments dont apply to you, just people in the same boat as them, which would actually be a pretty important perspective for such teens to listen to.

Eh....no. Almost regardless of degree? Not true. There are not internships available for everybody in every field. Drive or not applying yourself has nothing to with it if there aren't job prospects in your field.

Talking about your friends is anecdotal. There are droves of college grads who did everything right and can't find good-paying work and it's not because they were just too lazy.

Might be true.

But I hate when the untalented and mediocre people knock college, I think the "college wasn't worth it" crowd are probably mostly underachievers who really don't have any potential.

There are a lot of people who think just getting a degree is the end all and a job is supposed to magically appear just because you have a degree. These are the same people who get average grades, don't look for internships (paid or non-paid) and basically coast through college for four years.

Some people do all the right things and don't find jobs, but i find this to be the minority of cases in my experience.
