What's the work environment like? Stressful?

Training was def stressful, and it felt like forever (probably about 2.5-3yrs).. It felt like you were an idiot on a lot of days.

Nowadays it's not so bad. Only stressful on certain days where I know it's gonna be crazy with VFR flight following, military airspace going hot, and weather all making stuff difficult.

"Hard part" is the schedule. And not every ATC gets to go to a Level 10-12 facility like I did via enroute so their pay is probably low 100k

did you go the military route or straight to school?

Off the Street hire. Basically they have openings once a year for a couple days, as long as you have 3 yrs full time work experience you could get hired.

Theoretically if you worked at McDonald's or a warehouse job for 3yrs you could apply. Have to take a bunch of tests and go to the academy and pass, which is all really hard, but I knew people who didn't step foot in college or military make it through
