WTF? SZA last year was bigger than Keyshia Cole ever was. Solange had a huge 2016

SZA last year was not bigger than Keyshia Cole ever was. The only thing SZA has over Keyshia Cole is a Grammy Award performance and a Best New Artist nomination. There's nothing else indicative of SZA being bigger than prime Keyshia Cole.

Solange having a big 2016 is null and void. Plenty of R&B artists have had big years, but none of her success was comporable to other big acts of 2016. When I listed Alicia's As I Am, it was an album that rivaled Wayne's Carter 3 as the biggest album of the year and As I Am dropped in the tail end of 2007 while C3 dropped in '08. That album had a number 1 single and a follow-up single that was everywhere.

Nice list. Some of my recent favorites in there. DVSN has the my favorite album last year.

I would personally add:

Kelela (second favorite album of 2017)
Emanny
Snoh Aalegra
Gallant
H.I.M.
The Internet
Syd
Luke James
Tank
JMSN
SiR
Ravyn Lenae
ABRA
KING
Raahiem
Nao
Rochelle Jordan
Tone Stith
Kaleem Taylor
Mali Music
Sammie
Arin Ray
Adrian Marcel
Kenyon Dixon
Kyle Dion.

R&B is doing fine. You just have to look for it cause no one is pushing it. But I would argue theres better stuff coming out than hip-hop but thats just my personal taste.

That is the point. It's better than Hip hop right now to be honesty.

Lack of new stars killed R&B. Keyshia Cole was like the last one that blew up. I don't really recall anyone after her. So it's like 2005 was the last year R&B showed any signs of dominance. After that year Alicia's As I Am was the last R&B album that was really huge that wasn't a Beyonce album.

:jagsdafuq:

SZA
Rihanna
Ne-Yo
Bruno Mars
The Dream
Frank Ocean
Bryson Tiller
Trey Songz
The Weeknd
Chris Brown
Anderson. Paak
Miguel
Jeremih
Solange

You've either had your head literally in sand for the past decade, or you're just a deluded revisionist.

Like the thread title says when did R&b music pretty much fall off? Sure there are some R&b singers who are doing okay but the genre is no near as popular as it was when I was a kid in the 90's or even the 2000's. Was it around the time Chris Brown assualted Rihanna or was it when Usher and other R&b singers started doing dance pop type records. Or was it when artist's like Chris Brown decided they would rather Rap then sing?

2009 is the exact year it happened, it was a Dance Music takeover and if you weren't making that as a singer you were fukking finished

Even Beyonce flopped when she tried to go against it

Rihanna debuted in 2005. I already mentioned Chris Brown and Trey Songz. Neyo and The Dream are from that era as well.

As for the rest, Weeknd is the only bonafide star and Bruno is more of a Pop star even though his latest is more R&B than his previous work. The rest are hardly stars woth Frank Ocean bordering on stardom, but is too reclusive. Solange has been at this since a teen and her biggest year was recently, and as great as the album was, it still wasn't dominant, which was what I was getting at.

Most of the list you posted are artists that debuted last decade. Thats why I said there is a lack of R&B stars whereas there was influx in 2005.

You can posts lists of today R&B artists all day long. I am personally a fan of a few of them, but honestly, are they comparable to the artists of yesteryear vocally? I don’t think so. I don’t know about everyone else but I just miss people who can sing in addition to the melodies. Good love songs are nearly non-existent too.

no she's not, Keyshia Cole was definitely bigger on her first two albums than SZA is. There's just such dearth in the mainstream right now that whenever someone has a success it seems magnified. Keyshia was holding her own in the midst of Beyonce, Alicia Keys, a fading Ashanti, rising Rihanna, rising Ciara and a crop of other one hit wonder/up and down artists - Keri Hilson, Tierra Marie, Nivea, Amerie etc.

On that list I provided there are artists who are bigger commercially and critically than Keyshia Cole. If you're using some other barometer to determine dominance in RnB, then you've lost me.

Umm... Selling over 300K is not a flop. The first week sales of 4 might have been her lowest to date but it still went platinum and she still won at the end of the day.

SZA - has one album, hasn't "outsold" keyshia's first three...so far, commercially not as big, she gets more critical acclaim but that type of acclaim usually comes to artists like SZA, vs. the average straightlaced urban r&b singer
Rihanna - debuted in in 05, same class a kayshia
Ne-Yo - same cohort as keyshia, was writing/industry connected before he dropped as an artist
Bruno Mars - dude is a pop star, he just so happened to drop an r&b album this last go round
The Dream - i'd put him in the same class as keyshia as well, especially since he was writing/producing long before his debut
Frank Ocean - ok
Bryson Tiller - nah
Trey Songz - dropped in 05, same class as keyshia
The Weeknd - ok
Chris Brown - dropped in 05, same class a keyshia
Anderson. Paak - not bigger than keyshia
Miguel - not bigger than keyshia, he was on the cusp and fell off
Jeremih - lol @ even mentioning him, definitely not as big or acclaimed
Solange - came out before keyshia, never commercially as big, just got critical acclaim for her last album

Keyshia Cole discography - Wikipedia - only tracks US sales, but her first two might b pushing double plat WW. Also had grammy noms, and other award noms and wins. Her style of music aint geared toward being critically acclaimed unfortunately

At the time I made the post, Keyshia Cole was the last new star I could think of. I admitted, I forgot about Chris Brown and Trey Songz and they also debuted that same year. I was making an observation about there being a lack of new R&B stars, which I am seeing more proof in support if that statement than there is negating it.

In terms of dominance, I listed Alicia Keys' As I Am and besides a Beyonce album, there hasn't been any R&B album as dominant since. There isn't anyone really rivaling Beyonce when once R&B was a genre that was pumping out huge stars and big albums left and right.

Exactly.

What I liked most about Keyshia was the perserverence and consistency. She initially had some singles that didn't do too well, but she kept grinding until she got a hit and didn't stop at just one, she kept cranking them out.
