The use of the term "contemporary r&b" is confusing.

"Contemporary" to whom? Usher and R. Kelly are not "contemporary" artists to someone born in 2002, who is now 16.

To that generation, they are what we used to refer to as "oldies" acts.

Nor would Usher and R. Kelly be considered "contemporary" to someone born in 1955. The contemporary music they grew up with would be Motown, Earth Wind & Fire, the Jackson Five, James Brown, Prince, Slave, P-Funk, Aretha.

Maybe the question is when did "non-rapper" black music for the 90s babies fall off?
Some people consider the start of contemporary r&b around the time OTW and Thriller were released. That was a new wave before NJS

A lot of Soul music is on Bandcamp...

Thousands of Soul artists on there restoring the 1960s back...

Soul music is just now a niche product....major labels ain't gonna support it unless you are getting a deal in the UK....Europe still listens to it...

Traditional soul music is still being made in the USA and supported by smaller pred, black fan bases. Now, as you stated, Trad (retro-throwback) soul only goes mainstream in the USA if it's by a white person or a getting that UK stimulus package.

Whenever autotune’s rise happened and every rapper was just auto tuning their hooks instead of having r&b singers on their tracks

Now you will have to go threw that catalogue cause many of them got plenty of gems and just great EPs. RnB anit dead nikkas is just lame. Anit too many trap beats with these artist either. Ironically that why some of y'all want like them :francis:. I could of been an a$$hole and kept this list going but this is a good place to stop thoe.

Nice list. Some of my recent favorites in there. DVSN has the my favorite album last year.

I would personally add:

Kelela (second favorite album of 2017)
Emanny
Snoh Aalegra
Gallant
H.I.M.
The Internet
Syd
Luke James
Tank
JMSN
SiR
Ravyn Lenae
ABRA
KING
Raahiem
Nao
Rochelle Jordan
Tone Stith
Kaleem Taylor
Mali Music
Sammie
Arin Ray
Adrian Marcel
Kenyon Dixon
Kyle Dion.

R&B is doing fine. You just have to look for it cause no one is pushing it. But I would argue theres better stuff coming out than hip-hop but thats just my personal taste.

Lack of new stars killed R&B. Keyshia Cole was like the last one that blew up. I don't really recall anyone after her. So it's like 2005 was the last year R&B showed any signs of dominance. After that year Alicia's As I Am was the last R&B album that was really huge that wasn't a Beyonce album.
Did you just get out of jail or some shyt?

Name an R&B star since Keyshia Cole. I can't think of a single new R&B artist who consistently had hits and albums people really rallied behind like Keyshia Cole.

I don't recall one R&B album outselling Hip Hip albums since As I Am besides an album that Beyonce dropped. If you can't show me proof, your opinion on it is null and void.

Thinking back, I forgot about Chris Brown and Trey Songz, but they dropped debut albums the same year as Keyshia Cole, though Trey didn't really blow up until later.

WTF? SZA last year was bigger than Keyshia Cole ever was. Solange had a huge 2016
