This is great tbh, I've been studying relations between languages, power, identity and so on for some time now and it's HUGE that people "get back" to their own local languages.

I have this Algerian friend and she told me that from what she heard from family the traditional algerian community was/is MUCH closer to sub-saharean Africa than to the Middle-East/Arab world but that the combined effects of indeed the French calling them "Arabs" and money and a stricter brand of Islam coming from Saudi Arabia mainly has led to a schizophrenic situation between older generations that strangely appear more open than the new ones. For example she told me that local brands of Islam were a mix between "standard" Islam and local traditions, like elsewhere in Africa, and that they were bigger on soufism. Another friend in Egypt told me that when she was growing up Egypt was just another Mediterranean country with Italians, Jews, Greeks, Catholics etc and people were speaking all kinds of languages and really open but that now it's totally different. Her stance is basically "I'm Egyptian and African, NOT Arab" (she also lived in the Emirates so she knows), and she says she kind of doesn't fell home there anymore.

Yeah languages are a huge source of power. There was a book a read on that (which I never finished) and it touched on how when African Americans lost their language and identity it was a big factor in them never being able to get back on their feet.

Well the Saudis and the west are pushing Salaafism/Wahabism into north africa and sub saharan africa using subversive tactics. That's why you have these weirdo hardliners who are really young popping up in places like Tunisia and etc. They are a vocal and violent minority that links up with extremist fighters and use discord to cause upheaval (old school Machiavellian cia tactics). To be real the relaxed brand of Islam found in Morocco is actually loser to the true Islam that was found in the days of Mohammed, which had democracy and functioned almost as a secular society would, than the perverted and highly publicized version you see in the news everyday coming from other countries. Morocco is heavy with sufissm and the fusion of subsaharan culture and berber culture with Islamic culture. Just look at our dances look at our music and drum patterns then watch those of people in Sub-Saharan Africa... it's exactly the same. A lot of shyt just got buried buy historians with Agendas.

Breh I agree with every damn letter of this post, tbh I find it extremely sorry that Northern Africa has substantially turned in that direction because I feel that region should be the natural bridge between sub-saharan Africa and Europe ad the Middle-East with their own local flair, which is probably what it was back in the day. I'm mixed myself so I find "bridge" places the most interesting, culturally speaking. But exterior influences (from France and Saudi Arabia) done messed the place up I guess. As I said this Algerian friend too is extremely sad about people in the region turning away from their own culture (mostly out of ignorance/lacks of means) and towards the Middle-East.

it's true it's mixed people up and right now this generation is trying to find themselves. The new king has been helping a lot though, it also helps that he's a very intelligent and shrewed businessman. His father was more of a political player, a poltical genius who survived 14 assassination attempts, but that's not what is needed now. Morocco needs a cultural revival and economic revival (which is in progress). You got people who are mixed up everywhere such as black people in this country, or people in Dr. I done seen people in Morocco say straight up they're not African even though people looked at them with the side eyes they didnt give a fukk. How are you not African when you got at least one person in your family black as midnight? You're not African but your kings Grandmother is half Senegalese... and your royal family is mostly darkskinned?

This is the type of shyt that only corrects itself with education, but not being educated by revisionists and people with Agendas rather native peoples.

I've lived a lot of damn places thanks to the military but I consider Kansas City my second home. DC growing on me but KC just got that south friendliness, Bay Area vibe but still Midwest. I mostly miss real BBQ, easy commutes, 18th Street, etc. I gotta make a trip back there soon

My mom's house? I can always crash there for a night if I'm hanging around late in town.

Or do you mean like another city or country?
Probably this small town in the DR where my uncle lives. Cabrera.
I love going to this beach a few minutes from his house.

Then there's this beach, but it's a bit further away from his house...maybe 25 minutes?
