I always thought it was weird. And not in the ridiculously weird way that a lot of things the attitude era did. It was just an odd choice and extremely sudden turn for a funny character. Today, it would be like if they revealed it was R-Truth who really tried to kill Roman

Would of been better giving us no payoff 
Disappointment.... Looking back it was still disappointing but not the worst. A character like rikishi doesn't have the longest shelf life, so turn him heel and give his character a little extra juice. Unfortunately rikishi just doesn't work as a heel.

It’s implied he put Hunter up to it in storyline. So he technically did. Shyt was all over the place
In hindsight, they should have just waited a month and have it be Billy Gunn doing it for Triple H/DX. Especially since they just ended pivoting back to Triple H anyway. Doubly works with the "it was the Rock's car" thing as he was beefing with him around the time it happened and they could've said he stole Rock's keys and wanted to frame him.
