This is wrong. Austin was penciled in for Mania before Vince told Bret to talk to WCW. The interesting thing is what would've happened if he decided to keep Bret? Would they have gone Bret/Austin II or done the same thing?

Back in like 1999 or 2000 I read from Meltzer or Scott Keith that if Bret wouldn't have left that Wrestlemania 14 was going to be Austin vs Bret with Austin winning the title from Bret. Bret would have retired after that or sometime in 1999 and become a booker or road agent hence the 20 year contract that he signed.

Think about it, if Austin didn’t want to put Triple H over in a triple threat match, why would he LOSE to him the next month in a singles match at No Mercy? Can’t fault Austin on this one
