When Bret Hart got screwed over..that's when they really pushed towards an Austin WM main event. They needed the Tyson surplus package as well to make it all enticing.
This is wrong. Austin was penciled in for Mania before Vince told Bret to talk to WCW. The interesting thing is what would've happened if he decided to keep Bret? Would they have gone Bret/Austin II or done the same thing?

As for Mankind winning, It's been said that Austin didn't want to job (though he did two months later) or that Ventura didn't want to be seen raising a heel's hand. Probably a mix of both, because Haitch didn't really feel like a World Champ until he got with Steph and feuded with Foley.

I think Big Show had it in his contract. Although, promoters always had the person acting as a replacement win the match.

But I do agree-- HHH still felt like a mid-carder for that entire stretch. It doesn't help that Rock was feuding with fukking Al Snow and Bulldog. While Foley feuded with Val Venis. Both men were a million times more entertaining than HHH was at the time, yet still in nothing midcard feuds.

Nah..they were pushing Bret, Taker, Sid, and Michaels ahead of Austin. Austin was cussing and was exciting but he wasnt drivnng the show at all..no one even knows what Austin was doing at Survivo Series..that's how ahead Bret was to him....they gave Michael's the belt after Vince told Bret to take the WCW deal. This was after all the Austin merchandise was taking over and selling big..then they decided to make Michaels the buffet to get Austin the big moment at WM 14. Landing Tyson by Rumble and ESPN covering it is really how they took over the Monday Night Wars. Fans stuck around after Tyson left...and they grew into a juggernaut.

When the Rock promos got higher ratings than the Austin/Cripple H feud, they out Rock right back in the main event..lol.

Austin still had angles. Remember, this was around the time he first stunned Vince and was still heavily involved on TV. The only reason he wasn't wrestling was Owen's botched piledriver. According to Bret, Vince told him in Septemeber that they were going to intentionally breach his contract because they couldn't afford him. I figured by then, they knew they had to do Bret/Shawn at SS97, instead of the original plan of having them do it at Mania XIV (this is implying that Shawn wouldn't have thrown a bytchfit and left) Other than doing Taker/Kane for the belt, Austin was the only person that it made sense to main event Mania. Overall though, who knows how many times the plans changed that year. 97' was my favorite year, but man Vince must've aged by 40 years just dealing with Shawn and Bret's bullshyt.

Bret would have put SCSA over at WM14 for the title. From what he has said that was the plan. (clean win at SS16, fukkery finish at WM13, Austin finally beats him clean at WM14)

Actually....HBK vs Boss Man anytime between 1988 to 1996ish would have been pretty good

Looks like they only had one singles match, in 1992, a short TV count out bullshyt match. They could have been COOKING with 10-15 minutes in 1992 or 1993 :ohhh:
