As a soccer noob, why is there so much emphasis placed on international play?

Shouldn't the titles that u win for your club be enough?

People like to use it as argument because there's no money involved when it comes to putting rosters together, but in reality it's not like that, there aren't many players who can say they have won a world cup and it's a best of 1, you gotta have luck to win it, and you don't have too many chances in your career. Maradona cheated to win his, people forget that.

Because the stakes are higher in international tournaments and the big tournaments i.e. Euros/Copa America & The World Cup occur in 4 year cycles. Plus your footballing resume wouldn't be complete without participation/success on an international level.

As someone else pointed out, it is considered more impressive to win as a star on the international stage especially if your team isn't stacked with superstar talents because you cannot buy/sell players in international football....you are simply stuck with people who are from the same country you are (unlike in domestic football).

The World Cup is the single biggest team trophy that can be won in all of football, that alone should speak volumes to the significance of international football.

Conversely, since you are more actively participating in a year to year basis in club play, you could also argue that showing consistent excellence in club football matters more.

I think they should both be considered. Club might be more important overall but winning internationally can elevate you to that next level.

Add to that you could be a world class player who had the misfortune of being born in the wrong country, leaving you with zero chance of international success through no fault of your own.

He's a technical marvel, tactically a genius, and consistent as fukk.
He dribbles past 4-5 people at will. Scores incredible goals when he wants. shyt in 2013 (calander year) he scored 91 goals. And he'll back it up will 30 assists too.
He does the basics but at level that's completely alien to mere mortals. I'm talking about lovecraftian level eldritch abominations that render you insane.

When you defend Messi, teams are dedicating massive amounts of resources to attempt to stop them.

shyt like this is a regular occurrence and he still beats them all.

I used to be a Messi hater and did all I could to deny it but talent wise he is the GOAT.

Best English player if this generation

Was the most exciting maybe but I've always rated Paul scholes ahead of him as far as impacting the game. And if you want to reach and say Gerard was the same generation then he was better too.

Those England squads where some of the biggest underachievers I've ever seen and it was hilarious. :mjlol:

Best English player if this generation

Lampard, Gerrard and arguably Scholes and Keane >
Ashley Cole has a case for it too.
