It's all about lifestyle and preparation. Watching this show now where a Persian Glam King looking dude said he needs to save $500k before he gets married and has children. It's accurate, but then you need another $500k for retirement in Fiji. And even then you still may have to work a side gig to maintain a similar quality of life if Social Security gets wiped out around 2025.

Why do so many people have more in their savings than their checking account?

Most people have a savings account that accrues a small amount of interest.
You make a small amount of money for keeping it in the account. It'd be better served in a long-term investment account of a stock portfolio, but its easily accessible in a savings account.
