The anime was great. Whats not to like about nikkas flying around, throwing Kamehamehas and Ki blast at each other, with great detailed animation, great (well until the buu saga) story telling about a boy with a tail and his adventures to become a great warrior? Then you got the dragon balls themselves granting cats immortality, panties, and any other thing you wanted.
The same kids who gravitated towards violent video games, wrestling, action movies, gangsta rap etc, gravitated towards DBZ. Basically boys who grew up in front of a TV with vivid imaginations. Lots of them being black kids, but tons of other races as well. Its a generational thing. Maybe it was an older brother or cousin, or kid you looked up to that put you onto this shyt and you were hooked. Or maybe it came on one day after some other show you were watching and it blew your mind and you had to tell your friends...

Nah theres adult anime like ghost in the shell series is dope. Dbz is lame story lines that come up with new things every episode the nikka vegeta does something new or something random like his race turnjng into giant monkeys and smashing planets foh

the music and atmosphere used in the build up for Android and Cell saga

then when shyt turns around in a flash and the good triumph, like Gohan when he fukked up Cell
