I have two theories:
1. HIV has always been here. Its a virus, but the virus doesn't kill you per se. The virus weakens your immune system to the point that you die of the cold, penumonia, or some other disease that your suppresed immune system can't fight off. It was only until the late 20th century that the medical field recognized its existence.
2. The virus jumped from a simian to humans. This is why there is a concern for bird flu, or these other virus that animals have that can be transmuted to humans.
